Hiking – Nature lovers

The good news for nature lovers is that there are lots of places to go hiking in Malaga province. Here are just some of them:

The hiking trails of Mijas (Mijas Pueblo)

Tired of civilisation and beach? Pack your backpack with a sandwich and a bottle of water and  woopti!!! you are ready to Hike!  In Mijas Pueblo you find the best self-guided trail network with different levels of difficulty. The stunning view, the stillness and of course the beautiful natural environment of the area will make you relax and find balance in your body again.

Most start from the Mirador de Mijas Pueblo and throughout the walk panels provide information on different aspects of nature and local culture.

The best time of the year for walking is from mid-September through to mid-June, and January, in particular, is fantastic when walkers are treated to usually clear blue skies and the slopes’ almond trees in blossom.

For flower lovers, Spring is a great time to go as the mountains are in full bloom with wild poppies, lavender and other flower species.

Caminito del Rey

One of the most popular hiking route is “the Caminito del Rey” walk in Malaga, a spectacular route of vertiginous footbridges up to 105 meters high.

The Guadalhorce and Guadalteba reservoir-Ardales

The three Reservoirs known as Guadalhorce – Guadalteba are nestled in a stunning area of outstanding beauty close to El Chorro and the Camino del Rey and withing the boundaries of the Natural Park area called “Desfiladero de los Gaitanes”. The natural environment corresponds to the village of Ardales but only one of the reservoirs, the Conde de Guadalhorce, is in the municipality of Ardales. The two lakes are in the municipalities of Teba, Campillos and Antequera .

Montes de Malaga

One of the best places to go hiking with various levels of difficulty is situated in Malaga, the so called Montes de Malaga, a natural park with gorgeous hills, mountains and hiking trails. It is Malaga’s most important green space and a place for enjoying nature with officially signposted with 5 walking routs. However,  you can find here some less well known routes where you can discover so much more as you go walking in the Montes de Malaga.

Sierra de Castril, Cazorla

Only about 3 hours of drive from Malaga you find a fantastic place to go hiking with various levels of difficulty. Castril de la Peña is located at the foot of a rocky crag, in the north of the province of Granada, on the border with the province of Jaen and with the Parque Natural de Cazorla, Segura and Las Villas. The Sierra de Castril, officially declared a natural park, has a spectacular cliff and many streams, caves and gorges. Definitely a place you fall in love with. We recommend Hotel “el Geco Verde” which is a fantastic surprise you never forget and very cheap to stay. It feels like home with a breathtaking view and tranquility. Typical dishes include Migas con Remojón, Maimones, noodles with hare or with partridge, buns with a rabbit filling and the many different stews made with trout from the Río Castril. Local specialities also include a variety of local meats (pork, rabbit, chicken) all known for their excellent quality.
